FOREWORD

RCHITECTURE as an art depends not only upon
the varying needs of the race and the climate but
also upon the appreciation of the public for its
success.

Architects may design beautiful structures, but unless the
public appreciates the merits of the architect's conception
they will never be made a reality.

Public taste, as well as architectural talent, enters largely
into the determination of the character of a city's buildings.

Without a comparison of buildings, one with the other, or
without photographs and drawings of buildings, there would
be no material to create a standard for good taste. Therefore,
an opportunity to make this comparison is quite indispensable
to the acquirement by a city of good architecture.

This exhibition affords such an opportunity for comparison.
To the architects it offers a chance to compare their work
with that of others, to the public it offers a chance to create
an interest in the art of architecture whereby it can make a
comparison that will help to raise the standard of the art to a
higher plane. If it serves as an inspiration to the architects,
and if the public that visits it comes away with a better under-
standing as to what constitutes good work, its object has been
accomplished.
